Motivation for running a sound server

  • Problems with standard sound I/O
    • Usually non-portable code
    • Can only be done by one process at a time
    • Only possible on the local machine
    • No interaction between applications
  • Solution
    • Run a sound server process that uses standard sound I/O
    • Applications should output sound by using this server
    •
